Bibiliomat - RFID technology in the library

Long queues during the lending out and return of books and other media such as Cds and DVDs - from now on called 'books' to simplify matters - have been a thing of the past for the libraries in the Slovenian city of Velenje since 2009. What's different: The Bibliomat library system is based on UHF RFID technology, which results in major advantages compared to the barcode system. Without direct eye contact, the new system enables secure identification with a high read rate, a wide reading range, batch identification and recognizes passing through the security gates. This means that the lending out process works faster and more effectively. The customer indentifies himself with his RFID customer identification card at the RFID enabled reservation and return terminal. Both, the personalization of the transponder and the identification within the lent-out media, is implemented by deister's UDL 50 POS reader.

In addition, the combination of the RFID transponder and the deister UHF UDL 500 reader mounted on the exit door acts as an anti-theft feature. Every loan transaction is recorded in the database using each individual transponder number. If the transponder is detected by the UDL 500, a plausibility check is made in the database. If that is- for example, attempted theft - not the case, the system triggers an alarm similar to those of EAS gates used in retail stores.
