Innovative RFID-solutions for automatic loading processes

The storage and management of chemical raw and packaging materials takes place at Beiersdorf Manufacturing Hamburg (BMH) in two storage areas of around 15,500 storage slots (high rack and low-rise building). From here the production process takes place and the finished products are sent to the hub CE. In August 2008, Beiersdorf implemented RFID technology at two loading docks for trailer compliant delivery of all finished goods. Technology partners are “Drucksysteme Janz & Raschke GmbH” (for tranponder) and “deister electronic GmbH” (Reader UDL 500). The integration and connection was realized by Beiersdorf Shared Services (BSS), an independent company within the Beiersdorf Group. The service provider controls all SAP systems of the entire group.

Before the introduction of RFID technology the trailer compliant pallet drop off to loading points, was not practical. "The decision to use RFID has been supported by the core team members of Beiersdorf's headquarters, as it has shown very good competence in all areas where provided, whether scanners or RFID technology. Two of the UDL 500 readers installed at the open loading areas capture the loading process reliably in all weather conditions. deister electronic supplied the RFID readers that detect the pallets. The decision for the UHF Long Range Reader from deister electronic made because of the easy attaching and installation in comparison to the Ethernet connection.
